AMD is giving Nvidia a serious challenge in the consumer graphics card market, with its Radeon GPUs taking a clear lead in unit sales at a major German retailer. The latest figures show that AMD sold significantly more graphics cards than Nvidia during August, driven largely by strong demand for the Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9060 XT.
The numbers come from Mindfactory, a major German online hardware retailer, and were compiled from sales data shared by hardware analyst TechEpiphany. In August, 2,810 graphics cards were sold through the retailer, with AMD accounting for 55.9% of units compared with 39.5% for Nvidia. Intel made up the remaining 4.6%.
Radeon RX 9070 XT Leads the Charge
AMD’s success is being driven by its latest RDNA 4 graphics cards. The Radeon RX 9070 XT was the best-selling GPU at Mindfactory during August, with 870 units sold. The Radeon RX 9060 XT followed with another 600 units.
Together, the two Radeon models represented more than half of all graphics cards sold by the retailer during the month. Nvidia’s best performer was the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, which sold 270 units, placing it well behind AMD’s leading cards.
The results suggest that AMD’s strategy of competing aggressively on price and performance is attracting PC gamers who may otherwise have considered Nvidia. The RX 9000 series has particularly benefited from offering substantial gaming performance without reaching the increasingly high prices associated with some Nvidia models.
Nvidia Still Makes More Money
AMD’s lead in unit sales does not mean it has overtaken Nvidia commercially. In fact, the same Mindfactory figures show the opposite when revenue is considered.
Nvidia generated around €1 million in graphics card sales at the retailer during August, while AMD generated more than €941,000. Nvidia therefore maintained a narrow revenue advantage despite selling more than 450 fewer GPUs.
The reason is simple: Nvidia’s average selling price was considerably higher. August data put Nvidia’s average GPU price at about €895, compared with roughly €600 for AMD. That price difference allows Nvidia to generate more revenue even when AMD sells substantially more cards.
A Shift Toward Better Value
The changing sales pattern highlights an important development in the PC graphics market. Gamers are becoming increasingly conscious of GPU prices, particularly as high-end graphics cards become more expensive.
AMD’s current lineup appears to be benefiting from that environment. The RX 9070 XT and RX 9060 XT have become particularly attractive to buyers looking for strong gaming performance without paying flagship-level prices.
However, these figures should not be interpreted as AMD defeating Nvidia across the entire GPU market. Mindfactory represents one German retailer, and its customers and product availability do not necessarily reflect worldwide buying patterns. Nvidia remains the dominant company in the broader graphics and AI ecosystem, while its RTX platform continues to have major advantages in areas such as ray tracing and AI-powered features.
Still, AMD’s latest retail performance is difficult to ignore. Selling 55.9% of GPUs at a major retailer in a single month gives Radeon a notable victory and shows that Nvidia’s premium pricing strategy is creating an opportunity for its biggest consumer GPU rival.
If AMD can maintain this momentum with future Radeon products, the competition in the graphics card market could become much more interesting for PC gamers. For consumers, stronger competition could ultimately mean more choices, better performance at lower prices and greater pressure on both companies to deliver value.
